in a "capitalist" country such as the US, people are taught to take advantage of whatever they think they can (situations, resources, other people, etc.) in order to survive. & once they've got their survival guaranteed, they do it more to ensure (insure) their dominance.
it's a social construct, though... it works for a while, until the powerless, who for one reason or another (lack of luck, resources from the get-go, etc.) can take it no more. & then, how can the powerful, a minority, survive against a discontented majority?
now-a-days, the powerful resort to brainwashing (happy pills, "norms" that are unattainable for most people but keep most people busy & preoccupied, etc.).
