I'm reminded of a story by our beloved Khalil Gibran about a poor priest who encounters the Devil as he walks the mountains of Lebanon. The Devil, called LaWiss, has been terribly wounded in a fight with the Archangel and is bleeding to death. Unaware of who he is, the gentle priest shows great concern and tenderness, only to recoil in horror when the Devil introduces himself. He instructs the priest to help carry him to safety but the man shouts back that he'd sooner die than do that, that the Devil deserves to die etc.

The story ends with the priest rushing off to the village for help, carrying the Devil on his back, after being told what would happen in the world, what would happen to the Church particularly, and the good priest's income, if the devil should die.
