I understand what you are getting at, and I agree about the religiously based Assyrians being base. But to call the rest of us ¨secular¨doesn´t quite satisfy either. If you are Assyrian, it seems to me you believe in the god of the Assyrians...just as if you are Jewish you believe in the god of the Jews, and Islamic and so forth. If you are Christian, you believe in their god. It´s just that Christianity takes in lots of countries so it has no specific nation or group in mind...while to be Assyrian presumes descent from a particular land mass as well.
So...Assyrians implicitly believe in a god of the Assyrians...why not? Why can the Jews believe in their own, and the Muslims believe in their own, and the Christians and Buddhists and Hottentots believe in their own...but we, in order to be REAL Assyrians, must believe in one of theirs? WE don´t have to fall on our knees, Ashur never wanted that...and we don´t have to participate in incoherent mumbo jumbo...but we aren´t entirely secular either...obviously there is a god who once favored us very much...and he still does whether we know it or not.
