Tony,
And I would have loved to have had a beer. Come to Sleeping Dog...they got great beer here.
I mean this with all my heart...I would gladly give you each and every sculpture I make. That's why I stopped making limited editions...why limited...limited to what and for what? Just so a gallery can jack the price up.
There used to be a natural limit on how many of one sculpture you could cast because the mould making material, glue from horse hooves, would break down after about the fifth or seventh copy. With the kinds of materials we have today you could make a thousand copies...I aims to do just that...as soon as I can get back on my feet.
Your kind words make all those years worth it...years in New York when my small studio apartment was barely big enough for my son and lovely lady, and I would drive my old Ford truck to the local park by La Guardia and sit in back where my moblie studio was. It was nice...sitting on the fender of the truck, carving or shaping clay. Carried a bag of plaster and bucket for mixing..used to get water from the drinking fountain by the playground to mix plaster with...kinda nice really.
I had no idea then, in 1978, that anything would come of it...no idea the work would someday move some people to joy and others to fury...but of one thing I was convinced...the sculptures, coupled with our story, would leave no white person unmoved.
