NPR and Poland

So, I just heard a story on NPR about how since Poland is a new member of NATO, they have to purchase 50 or so New fighter planes... and this is a requirement. So, American and European weapons companies are all scrambling over this 4+ billion dollar deal.

Are you surprised that NATO makes the new members buy new fighter jets? I think that it's khussa ridiculous.
