The quintessential American...the best damn example, warts and all. Born around the middle of the country, born in the middle of the greatest crisis the country endured internally...born into the age that saw America first become a budding Imperialist nation...swept up in the Gold Rush...settled in the East where the son of the prairie and Silver City married Eastern moneied nobility...and captured America in print like no one else ever did or ever could again.
He was furious and heartbroken that America betrayed the Filipino people in their successful war of independence against Spain. That was when America first saw a good thing and stole it...as a nation.
He was much more than a writer of "Boy's" Fiction.
