...on TeeVee with a wonderful man whose name escapes me...he is a Quaker and was president of a small private Eastern college during the ugliest days of the Vietnam War.
At an all-school assembly he'd heard the anti-war activists on campus were going to take down the American flag and burn it, right there in the center of the quadrangle before the entire staff and student body. He'd also been told the football team was going to stop them.
Fearing a general riot, and being opposed to violence...yet not knowing how to difuse the situation he walked towards the flag pole that morning...when an idea came to him from out of the blue.
Instead of burning the flag he asked the students on both sides of the issue to get a bucket, water and soap...and wash the flag clean.
Is that genius or what?
I always thought intelligence meant knowing what to do when you don't know what to do.
