What a story! For those of you so pleased to be in America...the land of freedom and justice...you should read her book. Sankho would say you're safe if you aren't "guilty"...tell that to political prisoners and prisoners of conscience all over the world.
Her treatment at the hands of this legal system and the prisons, will make the hair stand on the back of your necks.
They basically tried to break her by subjecting her to the most god awful treatment you would be hard pressed to find in a Chinese jail. Solitary confinement and sleeping on the floor...a hole in the middle of the floor for a toilet...no paper...no drinking water but what came from the tap...women crying themselves to sleep at night for hunger pangs...in America????
And what was her crime? She refused to sign off on lies Ken Starr wanted her to swear to...anything that would smear the Clintons...and she wouldn't do it. They jailed her for the maximum time allowed, 18 months...you have any idea how slowly time passes?
Luckily for her people of good will and conscience around the country rallied to her defense and several excellent world-class lawyers worked for free...not just for her, but for all of us.
After 18 months without cracking, they had to let her go...so what do they do? call her back before the Grand Jury to ask the same questions...of a woman who could have finked at any time and been spared...as others did. They brought her back, asked the same questions she already answered, knowing she had no dirt on the Clintons...just so they could get ANOTHER order sending her back for another 18 months, so she would break...only she was let out after another six months.
That's TWO years in jail, under horrific conditions...and she didn't break a damn law, not for that...they just used the power of the Special Prosecutor, which was never intended as a medieval means of torturing false confessions and acusations from innocent people...to coerce her into lying against her friends...attesting to things she knew were untrue.
If America goes down that road but once...it will be the most oppresive country of the modern era...that's the danger of a democracy left unattended.
Susan McDougal...thank you. I don't think I could be that strong.
