Before that painting was moved from the New York MoMa I had a chance to see it. I never cared much for half of his work though I have no doubt the man was gifted beyond the norm. When you see the skill and quality of his earliest work, all the way back to his teens...and consider what styles and techniques he could have used, that were at his disposal, to express his revulsion at the dawn of modern warfare...you see an artist so shocked, so unnerved and saddened that nothing short of displaying his own shattered sensibility on the canvass would do.

There was no time to draw...to block out anything...to plan or think. He might as well have done the painting with his blood. Especially since the bombing of Guernica was an atack against a civillian population who never harmed anyone. This was the beginning of modern warfare...war waged against men, women and children...to spare the soldiers and their generals. How apt that it now plays a part in this continuation of State Terror against innocent civilians.

The painting qualifies as great Art to me because it shows the devastation a great artist felt, as if those bombs landed on his soul...

A Shakespeare struck dumb. My God...what would it take to rob Shakespeare of speech?
