I've lived all my life in & around Appalachia.... as poor as it gets in some parts of it, the culture & people are the most beautiful one can find in this country. The culture can best be described as dark - even the bluegrass & mountain musics are full of lyrics about death & sadness, as happy as the melodies may sound - & the people, the poor, can be described as cynical - lots of libertarians among the poor because they can't trust the government anymore....
Appalachia has been & still is under attack by the U.S. government & its corporate backers.
