: "Though the sanctions should be lifted & the oil-for-food program made obsolete over time, the problem is that the U.S. government only wants these things to occur so that IT'S CORPORATE BACKERS can gain faster access to oil revenues, itself. "
: No doubt this is true, but did you read the part on how the UN messed with the OFF program to secure contracts for Iraqi friends?
xxx Every nation has its own self-interest to defend. Why not make contracts for oil with the governing entity of an oil-rich nation? The global rich otherwise run things, & the last thing they want to see is anyone else economically & militarily powerful enough to compete with them, potentially taking away the wealth of the global rich. The article is a propaganda piece, designed to make the reader dislike certain European powers, furthering the Republican dream of "isolationism" (though it's not a true isolationism, because the Republican wealthy want a subservient world, controlled by a few, hard-to-depose, manipulative global rich; ironically, this "isolationist" policy is entirely dependent on the world's labor force's subservience & should be thought of as an economic & military isolationism, only).
xxx You could think about it this way: why did the U.S. impose sanctions for so long, necessitating the OFF?
xxx On another note, why did the German government openly oppose the war, yet allow the U.S. to continue to use its military bases in Germany during the attack? Why didn't a single oil-rich country or group of countries threaten to stop the flow of oil if the U.S. attacked Iraq? Military equipment runs on oil.
xxx What makes the U.N. a better institution for dealing with international affairs than the U.S. government is that it is a bit more democratic than the U.S. government, as it is made up of representatives from many nations with many, sometimes conflicting, interests.
xxx One more clarification of that earlier statement: I like what France suggested - that the *civilian* sanctions should be lifted immediately. I'd also like to see the U.N. send weapons inspectors back into Iraq to prove the U.S. government wrong about the existence of WMD that Saddam was supposedly hiding.
