Gaza Strip: Urgent distribution of food and water in Beit Hanoun
From 16 to 20 May, during the Israeli military operation that sealed off Beit Hanoun, ICRC teams distributed urgently needed food and water to over 50 families living in the city who had run out of basic necessities.
The ICRC also provided medicines for cardiac patients and people suffering from high blood pressure. A doctor from the Palestine Red Crescent accompanied the teams during one day, examining patients and handing out necessary medicines.
As the delegates were making their way out of Beit Hanoun at dusk on the fourth day, a young man called out to them to stop. He was waving a package filled with homemade bread prepared for them by his family with the flour and water they had just received.
The ICRC has been working in Israel and the occupied and autonomous territories since 1967. In the Gaza Strip, it provides emergency assistance for people whose movements have been restricted by military operations, including relief kits for families whose houses have been damaged or destroyed. It also monitors compliance with international humanitarian law, in particular the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the protection of civilians, and visits people detained by the Palestinian Authority, whose treatment and living conditions it monitors.
