Sperm uses heat sensors to detect the female egg much like heat-seeking missiles chasing their target, according to the latest findings by Israel's Weizmann Institute, which could lead to a breakthrough in fertilisation techniques.

In an article entitled 'Sperm on The Egghunt', the institute's 'Interface'magazine explained that "sperm have much in common with the heat-guided missiles used to track down planes and other military targets".

While missiles have seldom been reported to promote life, the discovery made on the heat-seeking mechanism of rabbit sperm by a team from the internationally-renowned institute could help boost human reproduction.

The study led by Professor Michael Eisenbach found that heat attraction guided the sperm on their long and complicated journey through the fallopian tube and to the ovum.

The findings were replicated in research on human sperm and, according to Eisenbach, the discovery could significantly improve in vitro fertilization treatments for couples having problems in conceiving.
