My father was stationed in Basra during World War II and the war in Palestine with the Iraqi Army. He was a doctor.
We used to drive through Basra on our way from Kuwait to Baghdad in the early fifties before coming to San Francisco. We had to cross the river on a wooden barge pulled by horses from the other side. Basra was a dusty hot town...thank heaven for the Guest House where it was shady and cool and the fountains chilled the air. What a story we all have to tell...and what a fine job the Jews did telling theirs...so fine that we all chip in to preserve Jerusalem and bomb the crap out of Baghdad...go figure...no don't.
