Didn't have a TV until last year, this time, when a friend gave me one for free.

However, I don't watch it except for the occassional movie & a few programs on PBS, whenever I have the time. You should check out Bill Moyers' program "NOW" on Friday nights on your local PBS station because he points out a lot of really interesting things about the way things work in this country from a progressive point of view. In other words, he's informative for those of us who are concerned with making the U.S. into a better place. Occassionally the News Hour with Jim Lehrer or BBC world news can be interesting (both are on par with NPR's Morning Edition & All Things Considered, as far as objectivity is concerned, so both can sometimes present a biased perspective on issues). News Hour &, if your PBS station chose to subscribe to it, BBC world news air every weekday on PBS. Also, I like the weekly "Nature" broadcast.... Animals are so much more interesting than man.... But that is my taste, not yours. You like The Simpsons, instead. : )

I do not watch anything on any other channels, because it is just as bad as you say - esp. the "news." Some of my friends like The Simpsons or Buffy or Star Trek or other TV series, but I don't like any of them, esp. because of all of the pop culture references that seem to act as advertisements.... In my opinion, *any* program that is "hip" is bound to be trouble, because those are the main vectors for trends set by corporations....
