Thanks for putting this one up here - unfortunately, I missed this one & the speech by Cornell West in Feb., too.... Many of my friends, being philosophy grad students here, teach material pertaining to this subject in their courses. One of my friends even gives a lecture every year about rape & violence statistics against women, & the students are always shockingly uneducated about this topic.

The interesting thing is, though, that around here, people discriminate more along economic status lines (& race plays into it a bit) & not outright "race," though the McIntosh speaks about the interplay between all sorts of discrimination. There are snobby undergrads of all races (but more white than not) on campus who, being rich, buy into the concept that this country is a sort of capitalist meritocracy, thinking that earning potential correlates with moral integrity. A lot of it could be due to peer pressure, too.... Rich Indian, Mid Eastern, Chinese, African American, etc. kids see what rich white kids do & try to follow their lead (due to media brainwashing which teaches us, as McIntosh points out, to see "white" lifestyle as "normal").

However, I have known rich white (& other race) kids who do not act like this, elsewhere.... Desperate to live interesting existences & taught to appreciate this by their parents, they continually question the world around them....
