I read everything he ever wrote...read almost everything written about him...steeped myself in his aura...since I first saw a photo of him...didn´t even know who he was at the time...1967. Waiting for a movie in Palo Alto...walked into a bookstore and there on the red jacket of a thin little book was a picture of the most beautiful, stunning face, man or woman, I´d ever seen.
To me the most poignant thing was his entry in the Bolivia Diary when he said he refrained from shooting a younf soldier kid from ambush...could have been the one who later executed him...cause you can never EVER let a Revolutionary come to trial...not George washington and not Che Guevara...anyway...I think that was the beginning of the end for him...it went against all the rules of that kind of warfare....maybe he sensed that he was only killing the poor, uneducated young men trying to support their families in about the onkly way such a feudal society allowed. The cultprit of course was the United States...and I´m sure if Che could have gotten into the halls of the US Congress...like we can...he would have far prefered another sort of activism altogether.
I made a sculpture of him once...way back in 1970...it was too overpowering...just as his features took shape I literraly ran out of there and took one hell of a long walk...until when I returned the whole thing had gfallen off the armature...and I was relieved. It was too powerful...not as great art...but as an expression of all I felt...what better deifinition could there be anyway?
