A day tripper is one who makwes the "trip" for only a day...isn't a permanent resident so to speak. As in being a day tripper to a beatnik scene or a psychedelic happening, when it's quite the opposite of the life, the "trips" you ordinarily take and live in permanently.
In the late 60's we used to go to the Haight in San Francisco and you'd see a mercedes pull up to a motel and a young straight looking couple check in...to emerge two hours later in full "hippie" regalia. Day Trippers.
