Around here, they call it the "War of Northern Aggression." Though I'm glad it eradicated slavery, I'm not glad it gave the federal government the authority to over-ride state governments... It's also known as a war for states' rights. The people down South were completely devastated by the war & especially its aftermath, when rich Northern folk took advantage of the Southern economy, that was in complete shambles, & still do. The argument can be made that the North did not use slaves anymore - they had the industrial revolution & child labor. What the civil war gave you, outside of the good thing - the freedom of slaves - was the foundation for the rich to manipulate a massive federal government with more power than the constituent state governments. No more boundaries between the states for commerce to be checked & taxed. Local farmers & communities have died off with the rise of a powerful elite who control & manipulate goods & people completely unchecked. Who can say that slavery doesn't exist? At the hands of an unchecked industry, people of all colors are even more of a commodity than before.
