Hoover never admitted there was a Mafia in the US. Part of the reason is they were blackmailing him. Wasn't till a Chicago cop stumbled on a meeting of major thugs that the government began looking into organized crime.
One of the most fascinating American strories is the Labor Movement ...the rise of labor agitators, Unionists...and the Communist scare bullshit. The Labor Movement in America has everything you'd want in a story...and it was a very important part of our story as a nation. You can thank the Union movement for all of things you take for granted today.
Just a hundred years ago, so brief a time, workers in America were little better than slaves or cattle. What a struggle they faced...what outstanding people they produced, what a threat to the ability of nations to get their working classes happily killing each other for the benefit of bosses back home...who then abused them when they were done killing people just like themselves.
It was always a mystery to me how the Labor Unions seemed rife with corruption, owned by the Mob for all those years. Then I thought, what better way to gut them, to make the rank and file distrust them, to cut them off at the knees and make workers disgusted with them...than by allowing them to become corrupt...which included getting rid of moderates and honest officials...allowing them to use the pension funds for casinos and other shady deals...when not stealing the money outright.
Unions choked themselves till today the American worker shuns the very idea...and gets picked off piecemeal. People should always be wary of their government...especially when it can be bought so easily.
