Fred,
This message makes a lot of sense. There's one part in particular that I agree with especially:
: Now the TV is in the classroom...soon the TV : IS the classroom...well
: actually it has been the classroom that : : counts most for some time. Just
: ain't official.
** I went back to my old high school a few months ago after having not stepped foot in it for over two years. Gone were the bells, the clocks... there were Televisions everywhere, and I mean everywhere. This is only in 2 years, mind you. When I was in high school, the TVs were on carts that you had to check out from the media center.
Anyway, so I went to visit my English teacher, the only teacher in that school that REALLY mattered to me... taught us about 1984, Brave New World, Farenheit 451, Film Studies, etc...... I was waiting outside of her classroom for the bell to ring, and I just about jumped out of my skin when this strange "electronic bell"... sounded like it came out of Star Trek. As soon as the electronic tone completed, they had announcements over the new electronic system..it's tied in through the TV...
So, anyway, back to the story.. I was speaking to my teacher and I asked her the usual things...how she was doing, etc. We caught up on old times, and I asked her how her students were. She said that compared to our class, just a few short years ago, these students are much slower. They have a hard time understanding concepts from the reading, they have a hard time focusing for more than a short while. Then, she pointed to the huge, new TV in the classroom (in every class room, now) and sighed.
MMmmmm.... conspiracy theories.
