"Inside Emmanuel, mourners dressed in the traditional black garb of devout Jews gathered for a funeral procession and accused the Israeli government of forsaking them.

"It must give us all guns. It must cut down trees for 50 meters on each side of the road so no terrorists can get near," said Rabbi Shmuel Omer. "But we Jews will win in the end. It's in the Bible. We will kill thousands of terrorists if needed."

Israeli troops stood vigil on Emmanuel's approach road exposed to rocky hills covered with olive trees.
