When I was in elementary & middle schools, I was made to read Junior Great Books, which were actually really fun to read & discuss at that age. However, there was one story, "Allah will Provide," that really got everyone's parents frothing at the mouth. News trickled down the ranks that all the German-American Brunhildes (as my mom calls them) were angry - it was a Missouri Synod (conservative) Lutheran school, & they'd be damned if their kids had to read anything about a foreign god. To them, it smacked of the occult... which made me even happier to read the story! :) My dad, who was on the school board, attempted to explain to the board that, though the characters were Muslim, "Allah" means "God" in Arabic - it was not a foreign god - & that it was a religious story which was very fitting for their religious curriculum. It was to no avail... we were handed scissors & forced to cut the story out of our books the next day. I remember that my dad was angry at their intolerance. I liked the story, though.
