In Michigan a similar chain of events unfolded. No, not the whacko on the train, but the Republican governor, John Engler, years ago shut down tens of mental hospitals by cutting state funding, and hundreds, if not thousands of crazies went onto the streets... and there WAS an increase in crime - if you will call it that - and I'm sure that the money saved by throwing those people on the streets was spent tenfold already in other related costs...like police, fire, etc... and other incidents caused by these people. I'm sure of it.
