You'd have thought the generation that was sent off to kill three million innocent Vietnamese, who never did a thing to the United States, and lost a good number of their own... the generation that said "Hell No, We Wont Go"...the ones who took to the streets across America to pressure their government into stopping a war they never wanted to "win" in the first place...wouldn't have been snookered so easily three decades later...when their own children and soon grandchildren will be called upon to go committ legalized murder.
Truth be told, I never trusted them at the time...it was obvious then too that what the Hippies enjoyed as a counter-culture, was paid for by the same old ways...ways they would have been loathe to give up if they once addmitted that American standards in general require the subjugation and exploitation of countless poor people around the world.
There is no way to avoid paying the bill, eventually. Capitalism can't help itself...it MUST be cruel and harsh by nature...not in the beginning, but eventually as those who practise it are forced to ever "make more"...to "keep growing"...Capitalism can't stand still...there can be no such thing as "so much, and no more". Can't be. Eventually we will use up what is most precious to us...destroy a village in order to save it...make ourselves miserable in order to enjoy life...and kill our children in the name of loving them...as we are set to gut our system to save it...or a weak facsimile of it.
