There's another reason...and it makes a lot more sense to me...and doesn't have its basis in noble sentiments or wishful thinking...but on more concrete realities. The trouble is you have clear so many cobwebs out of your head that most people don't have the energy or time.
You have to re-examine things like, "was the Soviet Union really any threat to the United States"? Was Cuba? was there really a missle "crisis, or was it hundreds of missles in Turkey pointing at Russia that prompted a response from the Soviets, missles we were supposed to take down long before? Did the Soviets seriously want to take on the United States? What and who was Eisenhower talking about? What's the greatest source of profit to the US government...how many corporations are in the weapons business?
Does our history revealcorporate types and secret agency types showing respect for the civil liberties enshrined in the Constitution? Have politicians become increasingly beholden to corporations and have corporations begun bypassing traditional politicians altogether...putting themselves in political office at increasing rates?
Have corporate types been working to shore up the Constitution or weaken it...would they like to see everything under the sun deregulated...free marketized...for our benefit or theirs? Remember all the "free market deregulation" that was supposed to bring us greater savings through "competition"...or have prices skyrocketed...as in the energy "crisis" in California now under investigation?
Has fear worked out to anyone's benefit? Whose? Do courageous Americans buy as much "protection" as frightened ones?
I believe the point of the last 65 years was exactly what Eisenhower warned us about...and when a five star general and two time Republican President tells us to watch out for the MILITARY Industrial complex...we should listen. Especially as we got into Korea in the 50's and got "nowhere"...into Vietnam in the 60's and 70's and also got "nowhere" and how we're about to get into Iraq...and will also get nowhere...except they've figured out a way now to keep us in perpetual warfare and THAT is the most profitable enterprise of all...like the Israelis...kill a father so the son will come for you...then kill the son when becomes a father so HIS son will come for you. easy pickings.
Of course there are things to hide and cover up...but the reason there are is because the laws haven't been adequately changed yet to make these things "legal at the time". I mean the robbing of the tax payer through "legal at the time means".
That's what I think the last decades have been about...changing the laws by getting into office at all costs...then doing business for as long as you can get away with it...after which you change some more laws and go right back to behaving "legally at the time".
Think what the business landscape would be like if terrorism had never existed? Ask Haliburton for one...they got an instant cash infusion...as did many other's. Think about that "peace dividend" we thought would be ours at the end of the Cold War?...the schools and roads and health care we thought we could finally afford. We 're broke again...and eager to spend what it takes.
Did a bunch of Muslims REALLY bring us to this pass all by themselves? You don't have to believe in conspiracy theories...you think the FBI and CIA and the rest of them just stumble around aimlessly? Of course their failures are far more numerous than their successes...but that doesn't mean they don't get it right once in a while. What do you think they're for...protecting YOU?
