Thoureau argues that your vote is really worthless, and that civil disobedience in the form of withholding your taxes from the government is the way to show your displeasure with their policies. He didn't agree with the Mexican war and with slavery so he withheld his taxes from the government and was thrown in jail. Of course, you can't expect even the most radical left wing (or right wing) americans today to not pay their taxes...heaven's no, nobody would do that.
It IS an interesting point, though.

It really does all boil down to money. If the American people didn't pay billions in taxes, our government would not be killing innocent people in Iraq, and wouldn't have years ago. Perhaps they would borrow money and have an enormous debt... well, even with everybody paying their taxes we have the debt.
It's such an interesting topic to explore.
