Fred,
During our stay in Iraq, I actually managed to ask Rabbie Yako about the Rabel Shmuel incident.
He explained that;
1. The convention organisers were and continue to be financial sponsors of the ADM.
2. Out of what they thought was respect for Zowaa, they without telling him removed Rabel's painting.
3. He has a great love for art, and satire especially your toon; (http://www.fredparhad.com/toons/no_17.jpg)
And while he is against the censorship of art he also didn't want to offend his hosts who assumed they were serving ADM.
The root cause lies with ADM and APP.
There are elements in both groups who are bitterly opposed to each other. The fact that Rabel Shmuel is related to one of the APP's main members couldn't have been overlooked by the organisers.
Truth is that the Rabel Shmuel incident wasn't just a case of censorship.
The truth is that the APP, although looking legitimate really has no real aim, which is totally opposite to the ADM.
After meeting with Nimrod Beito in Dohuk I made him repeat and admit that during his recent Sydney conference in Australia he had clearly stated that our Assyrian students should not learn a fully Syriac curriculum.
I then asked him if he believed in his own words then why was he sending his daughter to Nissibin, a Syriac immersion school?
He couldn't answer me. Leading me to believe that there's something not quite right about this guy and his group.
Anyway perhaps we should ask Andreas about the APP. He's neighbours with the Quasha Emmanuel in Germany and has helped them put together their homepage on www.atranaya.org. That should make him an expert on their policies.
So Andreas, Nimrod Beito couldn't answer me. Perhaps you can help us out. What is APP's policy on Syriac immersion schools?
