: Of course, natural selection is not a force, like gravity.

xxx However, though the environment exerts forces upon individuals w/in a species so that some traits *intentionally* selected for do not survive while other traits, unintentionally selected for continue, one can not make the statement that to some extent social environment - bringing w/ it a *desire* for certain traits - does NOT also affect the outcome of evolution... Society, as a structured entity, inevitably brings structure into a world of seemingly chaotic events... & it is a trait of *human* society, or perhaps certain human societies (e.g. those influenced by Judeo-Chrisitian beliefs), to relegate morality to certain traits exhibited both within & outside the human species. So, perhaps a trait that has yet to be extinguished by the forces of nature is the trait that allows us as humans [influenced by Judeo-Chrisitian beliefs] to continue to see the world in moral terms. Until then, I suppose that [Judeo-Chrisitian-influenced] humans will continue to desire to evolve, if possible, in relatively morally "better" ways. Not that this is desire or even morality, in themselves, are necessarily "good" or "bad".
