On NPR I heard a passinate debate in MA about Gay Marriage in their governmental chambers. You could hear the gay rights activists for 12 hours, chanting so loudly (though they weren't actually allowed in) that you could hear in the chamber "No Discrimination" over and over again. The people who are against gay marriage state that they want a constitutional amendment "protecting marriage", because ostensibly the courts "failed"... but I heard one very sane viewpoint. One person said "Protect marriage from what? Every single thing that can wrong with marriage (i.e. infidelity, spousal abuse, etc. etc.) has already been committed without gay marriage... protect it from what???" It just seems so insane to me. Especially after studying the constitution more and more... I don't know if there are any psychological (or other) factors that will affect the development of a child if (s)he is raised with two mothers or two fathers, so I suppose "gay adoption" is another issue entirely. But I think the fundamental issue is whether or not gays are treated as equal as everyone else. Also on NPR I heard a story about a lesbian couple in San Francisco who have been together for 51 years and who were the first to get their marrage certificate. Are they really hurting anybody? I'd love to hear some others share their thoughts on this topic... --------------------- |
