...GETTING IT. You could say Socrates died for you as well. He allowed himself to be put to death...nailed himself you might say. But it was never his desire to "sacrifice" hmself. On the contrary, he desired to live...to live a good life and to help others examine their own lives and the bilgewater of those around them who would prefer they don't examine anything. He could have avoided suicide but felt he'd lived long enough...that there was no real life outside of Athens anyway and as a parting shot to his fellow citizens probably knew his willingness to die rather than recant or run would damn them even better than his mild discourse had done. And indeed when we look ack at the Athenians managed to create during their Golden Age no less...and it is indeed admirable..the one thing that pulls them down from the stars and we wish they'd avoided was the execution of this rare man. On the other hand, those who murdered Jesus went on define him, use him and claim their murder of him was his chance show perfect love...show us what it meant when we had the example of Socretes already before and he didn't have the consolation of knowing it was afarce from wich he'd awaken clean shaven and fly to heaven. We revere the killers of Christ...try as they may to pin the blame on the Jews...we admire his executioners...we've allowed them to rule over our "moral" development. Is it any wonder Imperial Rome lives on and still manages to use Christ, their star victim, to keep the establishment going? It was Roman soldiers who spread the Gospel...not those mendicant barefoot ignoramouses. Christianity followed the roads and in the footsteps of the Roman Army...and Christianity today is both the booming commercial enterprise and killing machine the Roman Empire was before, but even more so after, it snatched his corpse and took off flying. And Andy is one of those handy mendicant peddlers who works the bak-roads and side lanes drumming up idiots. It takes all kinds of fools and killers and "decent" people too to make this thing hum along...right over the rest of us. Look at the sheer utility, the practical good sense of adopting Christianity as means of Imperial control. Before that a Roman Army would have to be manned and supplied...salaries paid, punishment meted out, order and discipline maintained and there was always the unsettling possibility that a number of Legions would be pulled togather and go attack Rome itself. An Army of mercenaries who are addmittedly in it for the money with lyaty only to themselves and their commander IF he delivers the goods...is a risky venture any way you lok at it. Further, this army would have to be garrisoned on some frontier outpost constantly vulnerable to attack from those it had addmittedly come to rob and subjugate to the Emperor's will. Or it would have to be maintained in the households of its victims and by them...which also led to all sorts of mischief. The Imperial Romans were no dummies but were very practical and down to earth sort of administrators. Given half a chance they'd have found a better way to acheive what they were after...enter Christianity and the Imperial Roman Gospel. How do you get your victims...whom you're still going to fleece and conscript into working for the Roman Empire and subject to the will of the Emperor, or Pontifex Maximus, if your delicacy prefers calling the pope by his official title...which was the title of the Roamn Emperors as well when they wore their holy disguise...how do you make willing "sacrifical" victims out of people? Well, you can't just say, "sacrifice yourselves for the Emperor because it makes him happy...gets him all of his goodies". You'd have to get them to find joy and even perfect love in sacrificing THEMSELVES so that their joy is their sacrifice...their sacrifice their joy. One good way is to tell them self-sacrfice MEANS love...that there is no joy in the world equal to sacrificing yourself and your wife and babes too, if that will make the Empire happier. You'll derive your own personal satisfaction from knowing "the Empire lives in you and you live in it"...which those people sort of had to since the Empire stole their lands and often them too. But at least they were "happy about it" now. And you didn't an entire cohort to do it with either...just one or two Andys...and they'd work for FREE too!...more "sacrifice", you know. More money than ever before flowed to Rome and filled the Empire's coffers. Ony now it was called "Peter's Pence". Now I ask you...is that brilliant or what? To haul away millons in gold and other valuables...more "sacrificing"...and call it a "penny" instead. See why the Church went into the education racket? Rome showed the way...like it did in every other way. But the absolute corker in all of this is that the basic tenets of this religion are above examine because they're so damn stupid yu don't know where to begin...and that was no accident either...but you're told to believe it all precisely because it's so stupid that it has to be real because..."why would they lie?" Why would Imperial Rome LIE???? Why WOULDN'T they???? This fleecing and shearing of the flock got so bad it eventualy led to the Protestant Reformation and then they had two divisons of the Empire, hot southerners vs cold northener...as there'd been before Christianity...and they went at it like mad killing and vying for the spoils...with time out to kill Eastern Orthodox Christians who were themselves killing Western Christians whenever they lit on any...and all of them were killing the rest of us poor bastards...till today Andy has the effrontery to say THEY got it wrong when he's the one who's about as lost and befuddled as a decent guy beaten over the head since childhood with a club could get. --------------------- |
