In every version of history I'd read till recently, Cortez received full credit for destroying the Aztec Empire. I ever realized he had only some three hundred soldiers to do it with. What a guy! How could this piddling army, thousands of miles from home and supply lines...without maps or much of anything have defeated the vast and highly developed Aztec civilization? Now I find out that another group of natives, pissed at the Aztecs, acted as guides, provided supplies and fought alongside the Spaniards. No doubt they were assured by Cortez that their "help" would be rewarded. No doubt this other tribe had a ZOWAA that had visions in the night in which large errections of a new and improved civilization spouted, with themselves on top...ahem. It was thanks to them...neighbors of the Aztecs, that Cortez managed to wipe out the people of Moctezuma. And guess what he did and to whom next. --------------------- |
