Iraqi doctors deny Lynch rape claim Nasiriyah November 12, 2003 Iraqi doctors who treated former US prisoner of war Jessica Lynch have dismissed allegations made in a biography of her that she was raped during her capture in Iraq. In I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story, published yesterday, author Rick Bragg says her medical records indicated Ms Lynch had been raped. A rocket-propelled grenade attack on her Humvee military vehicle left her with a broken leg, arm and ankle and a gashed head. Jamal Kadhim Shwail was the first doctor to examine Ms Lynch when she was taken to a military hospital by Iraqi special police. Dr Shwail said she was lying in hospital reception, unconscious and in shock from blood loss. "We only had a few minutes to save her life, we found a vein in her neck to give her fluids and blood," Dr Shwail said. He said her clothes were cut away to expose the injured sites and the anaesthetist cut away an area around her groin to insert a catheter to drain urine. "She was a woman, young and alone in a strange country," he said. "It was our duty to look after her and we did. Now people are saying she was raped . . . it pains us." Dr Shwail said he saw no signs of rape but neither was he looking for them. - Reuters --------------------- |
