I'm not asking the questions, I'm only trying to answer them. The answer you suggest may seem satisfactory to you, but to me it is a profanation. May I suggest the following answer that was offered by, Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P., to a Catholic layperson who was confronted with the same objection from a antagonist as an alternative: Receiving the Eucharist is not cannabalism because our Blessed Lord is sacramentally present. At the Last Supper the Apostles beheld Him in His physical appearance as they always had, but they also beheld Him in His sacramental presence under the appearance of bread and wine. When we receive Holy Communion we don't eat part of an arm or finger because He is sacramentally present. The bread and the wine actually become His Body and Blood, but His presence is only physical in the way bread and wine are physical and not in the way that one's body and blood are phsycial. There is nothing else like the Eucharist. He is present in the Eucharist in a truly unique way. But then He is unique is so many ways. The Eucharist remains that miraculous memorial in which Jesus truly becomes our food, His Passion is recalled and the soul is filled with grace. As Saint Thomas Aquinas noted, the Eucharsit remains for us a continual consolation and His greatest miracle. Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P. --------------------- |
