Assyrian Forum Fellow Assyrians, watch Jay Leno tonight Posted By: other news google news alerts on Sargon Donabed came up today (dialup-67.75.12.135.Dial1.Boston1.Level3.net) Date: Thursday, 26 February 2004, at 9:41 p.m. I live on the east coast and just saw Jay Leno so those of you in places like Chicago and California can still catch it tonight in your time zone. Mel Gibson was on and you all need to hear what he said and those knowledgeable representatives need to write him a letter. I don't remember word for word and hope that I am not misrepresenting but this is what I remember happening on this show tonight: Jay asked him how was it making a movie in a dead language and does anyone really speak Aramaic anymore. Initially Gibson said no then Leno seemed not to believe that and then he qualified not really and then on Leno's prompting he said well maybe their are (and he implied obscure or inconsequential even though he did not use those words) a few hundred thousand people somewhere that maybe half understand it. I was so offended that not only did he not realize that Assyrians exist who still speak Aramaic but the cavalier attitude and the way they were making fun of the gutteral sounds while saying that it is a dead language with the implication that noone of "consequence" really still speaks it or really fully understands it. I can't write him since I don't speak it and am not knowledgeable about those who do... but if you feel he is in error as I do, and you speak Aramaic and are knowledgeable... please please write him a polite but informatiive letter.. he can get fan mail through this address: Mel Gibson c/o Creative Artist Agency 9830 Wilshire Boulevard Beverly Hills, CA 90212 and Jay Leno through: ...I knew a noone once. --------------------- |
