Kris,
You just described perfectly what I heard a smart girl in Detroit once say about nasha diyyan:

"All chiefs and no indians"

This all chief complex that we have must have been caused by our freedom from dictatorship...and also, of course, the splitting sects.

We have only known this system of civilizing and therefore everything else that works against that system is reprimanded. We now live in a democratic society which allows multiple "pyramids" fighting for the same cause resulting in the persons on top in conflict. I believe this is a revolutionary thing in our society because it forces everyone to choose a side where in the past there was no choice. And when people are forced to choose a side, they consider other aspects, opinions, etc. Hopefully this will have a lasting impression and we as a society may breakthrough this "sheep-like" cycle of unrealistic religion and nationalism. Thus, "Thinking outside the box".
