...this is not as simple as it appears. There are no totally evil or good guys in history. However...the Assyrians were around at a time when people were trying to build civilization...that`s different from today when the barbarians ARE the ones who claim to be civilized. For instanmce, much harm was done forcing together the various city-states to make the first empire. But the alternative was chaos and even more bloodshed as city fought city devastating resources and killing off populations..also, Trade couldn`t develop without some security for travellers and so civilization would be limited to what each city developed...merchants wouldn`t know what laws they might be breaking when entering adjacent towns where for instance all the lumber was that they needed back home...or ink..or reeds or silver. Clearly the creation of an empire discommoded lots of people and got several of them killed. But without that step, there would have been continual warfare pitting city against city..people were dying in those wars too. By contrast today...civilization has come to mean using force on weker people to get more profit..we`re not talking about getting more oil, for instance..but about more profit..and more profit for an increasingly fewer number of crazy people...that`s very different from bringing the wheel, or loom, or medicine to EVEYBODY. Also, wars back then were fought for clearly discernable reasons..either to gain something or avoid losing something. Iraq posed to no threat at all to America..it DID pose a problem to those crazy billionaires because they want to be zillionaires. It changed nothing at all for their people who are paying even more for gas and always will..because the point of modern civilization isn`t to bring everyone along..it`s to benefit a few at the expense of everyone else. Wars today aren`t fought for what gold or treasure you can loot from your enemy. The gold and treasure is in the TREASURY...with these missles and tanks and jets and boots and rations and bullets costing so damn much and every corportaion having a War Arm...wars need to be manufactured just like the materiel to fight them with has to be..and by the same corporations who also own the newspapers now who tell you the war was necessasr, unavoidable, better now than later..and it will be surgical and over with before your next weekend off. And when it isn`t, as it never has been...they`ll blame "insurgents" who refused to fuck themselves unless forced to and go to brutalizing them even more. There is a world of difference between what Sargon and Hammurabi and Ashurbanipal did and what Queen Victoria and King George did. --------------------- |
