SO I think both your points are that we should stop this perpetual search for ethnic "evidence" and "purity" (sounds a bit like Nazi Germany to me) and focus on making real connections as humans today?

I have for a long time struggled and dreamed of a humanity who focusses on pressing social and political human need. I wish all the time wasted by these Assyrian intellectuals proving we are "true bloods" was used instead to build community centres, schools, womens services, drug counselling and crisis services etc etc. I love being Assyrian and in a warped way I am proud to be part of this linguistic (?) and yet imagined community. I love being Assyrian because I am tied to a certain history and have a certain language. I like sharing my cultural awareness with others and learning about their struggles as well.

I am not physically part of any Assyrian community and don't practice cultural traditions. I don't even speak the language (except with my new email buddy :). And yet, I consider my identity as one inextricably rooted in a certain geography with a certain history. I am but one part of the global puzzle of humanity and I love being able to share "my" people's stories and traditions.

I don't think human consciousness has evolved quite yet to a level where we can discard ethnic identities and rootings. I don't even think this is necessary. The beauty of this internet group is not that it is "Assyrian" but that it is a shared community that many of the users may call "home". A sad thing that is missing from the world today is a real sense of community and unity.

One thing I admire greatly about Islam is that it is a community in itself - a "nation" (ummah). You can be black, white, Asian - WHATEVER and still join a worldwide community. Your language, ethnicity, cultural traditions etc are not degraded or considered a threat to Islam. You can eat Thai curry, or Gulf Lamb rice, or Italian fresh shrimp pasta and still be a "muslim". You don't have be "born" into Islam but join on the basis of belief. What joins you in this community is simply the belief that there is no god but Allah. That Allah is our creator and He alone do we worship and ask for help. Simple hey?

In fact the Quran says:

Soorah 49: Ayah 13

"O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he/ she who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). "

And only the words of Allah could be so eloquent :)
