Another epochal moment in our history. Not only must we never forget Simele...but we should always remember the Assyria/Nineveh Rogation. While we must never forget these two we can go to bed each night totally and blissfully oblivious of thousands of clay tablets in our language dating back to the dawn of recorded history buried once again. Would it be a stretch to say our priorities are on backwards...as Assyrians I mean...though we've got our head right up our rogating arse...where it belongs on a Christian.

I wonder sometimes where I get this peculiar slant towards being Assyrian, other than from just plain cussed orneriness. I always appreciated the idea of Jesus but thought the rest of it was a bunch of bunk. The "idea" of Jesus being that of a guy who was good with his hands and told everyone who was bothering his people with Jew and Roman Rogations, especially the rogations of "his own" people... to go fuck themselves. This made him no friends among the Romans but especially set his own people to working against him.

I didn't come to being Assyrian through the church door and maybe that's it. You couldn't get me to a church door for anything...I never liked ritual stupidity... the spontaneous, inspired, kind is bad enough...but to have it planned out and write missles about it and launch them at children no less was just too much to bear. And since all roads to Assyria begin and end in church, I wasn't interested in being Assyrian either because it meant having to be Christian as well...they were deliberately presented as one and the same. And of course nothing could be further than the truth. How can being Catholic mean the same thing as being French...or Portuguese? You can see right there how confining and unaccomodating a religious identity can be. Being French or Portugeuse means so much more than being Catholic and the two are distinct in many delightful ways from each other. We're denied that "so much more" and haveto make do with a passle of unemployable priests speaking gibberish and rogating...making sure to weed out any real Assyrians along the way who aren't Christian first. Just how did being a reformed Jew become pre-requisite to being Assyrian? This is what happens when you shake, bake and rogate our children from an early age in a Christian rotisserie.

For years I scoffed at the idea I was any kind of a descendnt of the Assyrians...something too embarrassing to admit, if nothing else, because it raised the inevitable comparison in people's minds between where we were and what we'd become, as in..."What the fuck happened to YOU"? Our own people would reply..."Islam did it"...but that came 700 years later. Naturally they weren't about to say, "Yahwe FINALLY did it" in his Christian rogates first and then Muhammad came along to frost the icing...after which we were anything and have become everything BUT Assyrian.

But there's no denying the hairs on the back of your neck. One walk through the Assyrian Gallery at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and I knew I was related to those people carved into the stone slabs. If I'd never heard of Assyrians...as I'd never seen those sculptures before...I'd have known we were related. I'll never forget the thrill of recognition when, after staring at one slab for some time, I walked up to the tag and saw the word, "Nineveh" on there.

Any meaningful way of being Assyrian, that hasn't been downright humiliating, came way before Jesus, that nice mensch of a Jewish boy, came along.
