This play all began in July 1979 when the CIA helped Saddam Hussein come to power in Iraq. He did his job very well acting as their attack dog and helping neutralise the hard-line Iranians in 8 long years of war. Meanwhile the US made billions overtly selling conventional and weapons of mass destruction to Iraq while covertly selling other weapons to Iran.
As stupid as Saddam was he at last realised the futility of the war and after 500,000 Iraqi soldiers, many of them Assyrians died Saddam finally retreated to a weakened, bankrupt and unstable country. Uprisings in northern Iraq were brutally put down.

It was then that the US used the Kuwaities to lower oil prices and apply even more pressure to Saddam. The thug Saddam foolishly believed Gillispie when she said that the US would not get involved with internal Arab disputes.
The first Gulf War soon followed and a "shocked" US took action to secure even more bases in the Middle East and increase their oil companies profits.

The war over and Iraq devastated the US used the UN to conduct over 12 years of sanctions on a war shattered nation which resulted in over 500,000 children, 27,000 of whom were Assyrian children, under the age of 5 dying uneccesarily.

Next came September 11 and the excuse the US needed to reinvade, conquer and remove Saddam from power. Another estimated 35,000 military and over 10,000 innocent Iraqi deaths was the cost Iraqis paid to finally be "liberated" from the thug the US had originally installed those many years ago.

The defining moment in the Pacific War of World War II was when the US marines liberated mount Surabachi on Iwo Jima and hoisted the US flag.

Now after "liberation" the US and UK troops sum up in one photo over 25 years of US foreign policy towards Iraq and the Middle East.

Always known as the "land between two rivers" Mesopotamia (Greek) and Beth-Nahrain (Syriac) this photo sums up the tragedy of it all.

Photos early this week showed US troops soddomising Iraqi POWs and in this photo an Iraqi prisoner, who may be Christian, who may be Muslim, but who's ancestors were definately Assyrians. He may be guilty, he may be innocent.....but there he sits with his hands tied behind his back while a British occupier urinates on him.

I can't help but remember the caricature that you drew over one year ago showing a Christian Assyrian with a British and US soldier taking glee in being urimnated upon.

It's a shame that sometimes life must imitate art.
