... I realize that I spend too much time worrying about politics. Thinking about how corrupt and degenerate the system has become. Considering the lives lost around the world because of my tax dollars. And then the solution: stop thinking about these things...but at what price? That's how we got into this mess in the first place. People become disenfranchised with the government that is "by the people, for the people" and then the government is no longer for the people, but for an elite. What's the solution? I read a paper by a classmate that has an interesting line in it: "Green follows white". It's absolutely true. It sounds horrible, I know, when anyone stereotypes for any reason, but it seems to me that most of the problems in the world right now can be traced back to money, and a bunch of white billionaires who sit in posh rooms and make decisions for all of us. I give up. Another friend and I were talking about the new liberal talk radio station, called "Air America", which is in several major cities. Al Franken has a show called "The O'Franken Factor" on it. My friend says it's destined to failure. He thinks that a real liberal station would play good Rock and Roll, and only good Rock and Roll, 24 hours a day... and that the music would do the talking. He thinks that the voice of the left will always lose to the voice of the right in talk shows...that only Rock Music can tip the scales back to sanity... but I think he is absolutely correct. I think the chorus to this song sums up everything that can be said on the subject... that the rock star will give lip service to whomever is in power, and continue to do his job every day... to play the guitar and sing...sing a message of hope and freedom and expression and subtle or outright rebellion... I can't imagine a more horrible job than being a songwriter of "patriotic" songs. Patriotism is the refuge of the scoundrel... yet I can be truly patriotic and not be the scoundrel. I need to visit Europe one day. The homeland as well. Maybe in 10 years when things settle down. ............................................................ We won't get fooled again by: The Who [I was raised on The Who, among other groups... bless my dear padre] We'll be fighting in the streets With our children at our feet And the morals that they worship will be gone And the men who spurred us on Sit in judgement of all wrong They decide and the shotgun sings the song I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again The change, it had to come We knew it all along We were liberated from the fold, that's all And the world looks just the same And history ain't changed 'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again No, no! I'll move myself and my family aside If we happen to be left half alive I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky Though I know that the hypnotized never lie Do ya? There's nothing in the streets Looks any different to me And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye And the parting on the left Are now parting on the right And the beards have all grown longer overnight I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again Don't get fooled again No, no! Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Meet the new boss Same as the old boss --------------------- |
