I know now how it came to pass in Germany in the 30's. I remember being stunned the first time I learned the Germans voted the Nazis into power...that they never seized control. Then there were the Goodies...the social programs, the decrease in unemployment, the benefits, the State sponsored vacations and camps. Things were so good...and getting better what with Krupp and I.G.Farben and Porche and all those bidnessmen backing Hitler...and let's not forgot the Catholics who know all about goodies and how you get them through murder..."sacrifice" if you prefer.

Then came the small, harmless really...little illegalities...committed by the government I mean. People approved in the beginning because even they could agree that those "undesriables"...REALLY WERE! Surely THEY would never be in anyone's targest sight. So they didn't mind when laws were changed...when the admirable Weinmar Republic and its Constitution were slowly done away with because they stood in the way of progress and security and besides a lot of crimminals and "those" kinds of people were being protected by the Law and undermining good old German purity etc.

And we all know how it played out in the end. At first they came for the people you happened not to like...and then they came for you. It took a war and millions dead and by then even the Germans who'd been Nazi pets were killed or lost it all...except for the really big boys...they always get away.

What we've witnessed in Iraq and now with the capture and parading of Saddam is a triumph of the same sort of thuggery...of course loyal Americans and Germans too won't see it that way...they never do till it's too late.

You have any idea how many thugs worse than Saddam the United States has on its payroll still?
