Paraphrasing Mark Twain, "Replace every occurrence of the word 'very' with the word 'damn.' You won't change the meaning of your sentence, and your editor will be sure to delete the 'damn.'"

From Strunk and White's The Elements of Style:
Very. Use this word sparingly. Where emphasis is necessary, use words strong in themselves.

Jeff, I'm not criticizing your paper with a mean spirit. I'm just criticizing the paper, as I would for *ANY* friend - pointing out things that I've been told before by my professors & English teachers. If you don't have a copy, The Elements of Style is a good basic, inexpensive book with tips on writing. I recommend it to everyone, & it was a book that was required for my classes in undergrad. If I didn't point out those things to you, it would mean that I don't care enough about you (as a friend) to give you helpful advice.
