You said we can't count on everyone to know what the right thing is and then do it...so this religion comes in handy as a cattle prod to encourage good behavior where the individual may be incapabale of being moved to it through any other means. That would be fine if you only dealt in hopeless reprobates, grown past the point of being reasoned with and made to see the light...people who killed and raped and stole from widows and orphans and just couldn't be convinced to stop in any other way except to be made fearful of everlasting and unbelievable cruelty done to them in their turn by a "God of love"...ever mind the irony...its lost on you. Or...in his other guise, the god of love will hold out an ubheard of carrot to encourage them to leave their sinful and evil ways.

But this is just you trying to be cute and sound decent and concerned about wrong-doing in the world and what..."oh what", can roly poly mother church do to help. If you stuck to dealing with the most confirmed outlaws in this manner you might have a case, though this is far too practical an approach to come under the heading of "divine inspiration". It's more like what a prison warden would come up with...but never mind...no one expects you people to be culled from the very brightest.

But you don't stop there. You use this same miserable approach to the new-born children of these sorts of reprobates as well as the children of anyone else careless enough to entrust them to you. You use terrors and cattle prods and celestial candy on newborn infants...children whose minds could develop normally and who, with a little decent education, could be brought to understand the sheer sublimity of the Golden Rule without filling their minds with terrors and venal desires and making them fit for the chronic ward in Bedlam. Making mental cripples is your stock in trade. Someone has to build those mansions you call "Cathedrals". You HAVE to thwart chidren...there is no other way to make them "faithful" to you and lose faith in themselves.
