I know on the surface of it this post may seem untimely and irrelevant...certainly minor...but it isnīt. Not if you consider what really lies at the root of this mess weīve made of ourselves and how no one America knows anything of us and are only aware of Chaldeans because they wera the biggest crosses and drive the biggest cars..or wear the biggest cars and drive...itīs the same. I heard through the grapevine that Janey Golani was being sued by A Chaldean lawyer on behalf of I donīt know which half-wits. They seem to feel Janey is responsible for their own fuck ups. I managed to raise $90,000 with Janeyīs help...at no time did she receive any money or benefits...on the contrary she and Atour put in long hours with me and on their own travelling, loading and unloading, explaining, giving presentations following-up to get donors to follow through..and all of it was going well enough till Nimrod and Jackie Bejan decided to get back at me by writing their lies to people in Detroit...and you know how ready our people are to feel cheated...and so the donations stopped and so did the work on the Hammurabi. I wrote a letter to the lawyer with an offer to make another Hammurabi, all at my own expense...without a dime from them up front...something unheard of in my profession. All I asked is that they set aside $100,000 for the monument IF they approved of the maquette and all the work right up to the foundry doors..and I would pay the casting and moulding costs etc out of MY "PROFITS"!!! In return for such an "exhorbitant" sum, they wuld have gotten a monument of our Great King...no, NOT Jesus...to grace Detroit with...something that would have been positive, affirmative and lasted for as long as this nation does..noit a bad deal all the way around. And I received THIS back...to which I add my response.... > Dear Mr. Parhad: > > Your email explaining the circumstances regarding the Hammurabi Monument > are unacceptable. We are owed $6,000 by you for a monument that was not > completed. > > You provide explanations that you see are reasonable. We do not. The > actions you have taken in the United States are tantamount to fraud. > > When someone collects money under a false pretext of doing something, > then does not accomplish that task, they owe money. Therefore, we > expect a certified check for $6,000 to the Chaldean Iraqi American > Association of Michigan. If we do not receive assurances that these > funds will be returned to us, we will then be left pursuing this matter > with you and Ms. Jaeney Golani. > > I would like a response back from you within the next 72 hours. > > Sincerely, Dear Ms Uberroth, There is something very basic about the structure under which these monuments were built that you either donīt grasp or donīt want to. Let me remind you that it worked successfully in two cases where the people followed through on their promises. I am a professional sculptor who is hardly interested in defrauding anyone..why? What good could it possibly do me since Iīm capable of making money AND keeping me reputation? Both with the Ashurbanipal Monument in San Francisco and the Shumirum intended for Chicago, but delayed for exactly these immature and tantrum indusing states we people get into...the money was raised and the work completed. Let me remind you that the deal was...the people provide the money...I complete the monument. If the people provide half the money and I do half the work...and wait and wait for the rest of those who made committments...and they donīt follow through..what do you suppose my obligations are? If anything you should be suing the people on whose false promises I danced attendance..and not Janey Golani, who spent countless hours trying to get donors to step forth and actually release their grubby fingers from their cash. It is absurd to claim I set out to defraud anyone. I had every intention of completing the monument. Had it been merely a question of fraud I sure as hell wouldnīt have put in two years of work...just pocketed the cash. Is $6,000 a lot of money for you? But..you tell me when the trial is and I will be happy to come to Detroit from Mexico and testify before any judge or jury. Janey Golani told people if they gave their donations as they promised to do..I would indeed complete a Hammurabi Monument. It isnīt like all the money was paid and I ran off to join the circus. What did you people expect..to get the monument for half price? Is this the way you buy your Cadillacs? Do you pay half the money promised and demand you get to keep the car because it would be fraud on the part of General Motors to expect you to pay full price? There was no fraud, for several reasons, all of which Mr. Acho knows full well. This misguidied effort to punish Janey Golani, when all she tried to do was act as liason between myself and the community...when she never received any benefit herself except to wish to see some manifestation of our culture installed proudly in Detroit and now gets THIS barabaric attempt to cover your own failures by blaiming her...well itīs no wonder every other ethnic group is represented in the Arts in Detroit, including Africans but NOT Chaldeans. As I said, though I donīt have to, I am most eager and anxious to explain to a jury of grown ups just what has happened and what COULD have happened. You people have a knack of snatching defeat and humiliation from the jaws of victory...we were almost there...and have THIS instead. Way to go. Sincerely, Farid Parhad > --------------------- |
