It's 6: 15...I woke with a start when one of 567 roosters that live next door croaked out the morning, with the words in my head, "I didn't know till NOW that Roosters were Catholic". In fifteen minutes I'll hear the clop of horses hooves as the night patrol comes by up the hill to their stables...Catholic roosters...brains been in a fever for two days, something is working its way up from below...as a kid I too had learned to say, "we are Assyrians, we haven't had a country in centuries". No wonder Peter wouldn't allow us to talk about Muslim Assyrians and the rest of them would clap us with the name "Muslim" and "Muslim brothers" when they had nothing else to say to the points we raised...ones they can't afford to discess because to do so would begin to peel back the veneer they've been hiding under, that there is nothing worse to them than Islam..the dirty secret might come out..."Muslims are the Assyrians"...we are the Christians who seek to steal that identity and make it over.

There it is in its simple glory...it's stark truth. All this time we've been arguing that it's wrong to mix together ethnicity and religion..that Assyrian is Assyrian, it is not any longer a religion...and we were right, but we were wrong too...for it isn't what you say you are...it's what you do about it( that's why the rest of us are "puzzled" by the complete comatose inactivity of these "activists)...and Christians have done and continue to do nothing about being Assyrian except to urge the destruction of their homeland in retaliaton for more of our having flocked to Islam...that and INSIST that the Christian liturgical language, which by accident became the language of their Christ...HAS to be taught in a Muslim country, where the could give a shit if it dies everywhere else they live and have done nothing to promote any kind of "Assyrianism" that isn't 100% Christian first and foremost.

The quaint distincton that this argument rests upon..that Muslim Assyrians CAN'T be Assyrians because they don't "talk a lot" about being Assyrian...ignoring completely that for centuries they have been the ones guarding the country of Assyria and not caring what it was called, not caring over the "name" OR the religion, fighting and dying and working for it...and in those cases where Christian Assyrians have done so too...we Christians have called them "traitors". How? To what and whom are they traitors? They work for and defend and love their country...they are not put off by a name...they are not put off by a religion...nothing and no one induces them to ally themselves with foreign powers of the Christian religion to work against the welfare of the entire country and all of its people.

We are the ones, we Christians, who are not Assyrian...because our religious jealousies have had the practical result of making us traitors to our own homelands and all of the mistreatment we've ever suffered in those lands...starting when the escaping Christians of Urmia were allowed to find refuge in Iraq and then turned on their hosts claiming a part if not all of THEIR country...the host's, not the foreigners, who decided to try to take their land away from them...all that the Christians there have suffered they brought on themselves because of their clergy...because Mar One is still battling Mar Two.

The claim to exclusive Assyrian identity is nothing more than a scam dreamed up by various competing Christian clergy representing various sects who think in this way they'll triumph, not over Islam...but over OTHER sects...and Christians of Syria or Turkey have picked this up and clamor for "ethnic" rights when what they mean are religous privilleges and the chance to put out the eyes of that other clergyman. We have gottten and will get nothing...and they all know that...but that isn't what this is about...this is about winning one for THEIR version of Christ and, incidentally, getting as many of their brethren killed who chose Muhammad instead.

This is why we're so hung up on the name...and meaningless distinctions. The Assyian identity is in Iraq...where it has been for centuries. Christianity didn't change it and neither did Islam. What changed was the followers of Christ, who could never forgive the ouster of their Lord, a Jew...and have never forgiven Islam...at least those who cry the loudest today about being the true and real Assyrians...meaning the pissed-off Christians. And atheists like Peter and Aprim and Hanna who seem to say, "Let's put religion behind us"...only mean it with regard to Christian distinctions but NOT between Muslim and Christian...for the entire argument rests on that jealousy. They go along not, "for Christ", but because they hope to gain something they think will compensate them for their failure to live up to some imagined "gratness" whose denial they seek to blame on someone else...rather than on their own meagre talents and silly heads.

The ONLY way we can perpetuate this myth that we are the ONLY Assyrians, is to play these name-games...to tell "the world" that we are pure and only those with the name "Christian" added on can be Assyrian. But it backfires..blows up in our faces and has been for years...because those age-old jealousies Christians have always been willig to blind other Christians for, surface and we go to accusing each other of being the "wrong" name...and our chickens are coming home to roost...this issue will be exacerbated soon because we're splitting again...we're splitting along Chaldo-Ashur...like we split before in ten other ways. There's no way to avoid it because we divided ouselves from Ashur to begin with and then with our brothers and sisters who turned to Islam, DISUNITY is all we know...using the identity as a pretext to steal something that doesn't belong to us EXCLUSIVELY has brought us to the point where we can't help but sliver and shatter indefinitiely until we're gone and what a relief to the lands of Ashur that will be for I hardly think Western Christianity will find Muslim Assyrians as willing and eager to betray their homelands...as they have found us Christians...and if they do...it will be obvious what to call them...what we have been all along through our religious envy..."Traitors".

I didn't "know" this when I began four years ago. It's only after jumping in the middle and fighting my way out and meeting and hearing all of these absurd points and National Questions that it hit me..."The rooster is Catholic". Of course...why did it take me so long?
