What does it do to people if you convert them overnight to a religion that`s completely foreign to them? The Jews developed their religion over centuries and came to the belief in a Messiah "naturally"...in the sense that it grew out of their experience in the world...unable to build a toilet to last ten years...unable to maintain any kind of cohesion except through violence...and finally unable to guide their destiny on earth to anywhere other than that sheepshit "kingdom" no one WANTED to "capture". The Jews needed a Messiah...needed one desperately. It never dawned on them that they needed one so badly because the god they made up seemed to enjoy nothing more than giving them a good thrashing...usually by having someone else do it...for which they thanked him and said this was really his way of showing perfectlove"...like eating human flesh would come to be later…something that on the face of it seems to contradict what`s claimed for it. The Jews were about as “favored” by their god as eating human flesh is any way to show love.

Take the Muslims as well...their religion also grew up with them...was natural to them. Though it was new and fresh in the Prophet`s own day...it obviously touched a chord deep within the Arabs that so many of them seized upon it...it unlocked something deep within their hearts obviously. The Romans too had developed their own religion naturally as an outgrowth of their lives and value system...Jove was never imposed on them...he was theirs all the way. And of course the Assyrians had developed and refined their own religion for centuries and under its inspiration they`d managed to build half of civilization...along with their brothers and sisters of BetNahrain of course.

Point is..for a religion to be "yours" and at all effective..it has to come from you. None of the people the Roman Army encountered when it went out Evangelizing ever heard of Judaism or Christianity or wanted to then. It`s as absurd as claiming Martians came to earth and babbled their religion and all of us jumped willingly into the arms of their three headed green God. Of course they could kill our parents, enslave us and raise us from the cradle believing we really loved old Mugwump, the Lord of Mars..that he was "just the same as" Jesus..only better cause you got to eat rutabagas forever in the Martian Heaven when you died. People just don`t do those sorts of things willingly.

Imagine coming to Christians today with a religion totally foreign to them and expecting them to leap into its arms...not with all they have invested in it..no way. Hells bells they all believe in the same god and are killing each other anyway…what`s the chance of their dumping their belief-system willingly? Neither would Assyrians have acted in so singular a manner..neither did any of them..this is all corporate PR..that`s all..to cover over the crimes committed in forcibly converting people to the new Roman religion…which was as functional a thing to them as their previous one had been..a way to maintain order and obedience and keep the goods flowing to the Emperor.

Where the boys and the Vatican too claim that "it was almost the same thing", is when they trick you into focusing on universal things like Love, Goodness, Charity, Generosity...but these things don`t "belong" to any one religion and they were all well in place before any of them came along. If they would stick to what makes the religion, in this case Christianity, unique and unlike all the others and unlike what was believed by the people to be forcibly converted...which in Christianity means a belief in a Messiah who will come rescue you..or who had to be killed for you and you have to eat and drink him to get to Heaven...then these peculiar and particular things are nowhere to be found among any other group of people , other than the Hebrews and their cousins the Christians.

Assyrians didn`t believe in a Messiah for a good reason..they didn`t need one. There was nothing to be saved from...life was as lovely as it could be back than and nowhere more so than in BetNahrain. Their notion of death and the afterlife was a shadowy place where your spirit went on but in a dim sort of half-light and that was fine because you`d had the greatest possible ride while alive and we were never greedy...it was eternal rest after a fantastic life on earth. The Hebrews had every reason in the world to want a shot at some soap and comfort...and as they weren`t getting any of it on earth..they needed to believe in someone ELSE bringing it to them..all they had to do was qualify...but they weren`t the ones to do it for themselves…it was as completely beyond them and out of their control as building a wall was.

This is completely foreign to Assyrians..and you can see how ill it suits them centuries later when they`re still waiting on a Messiah...who was a Jew and a Jew idea to begin with, to come give their lives meaning..so much so that Ferd is thrilled when the vatican "finally" pays some attention to the "language of Christ".

In fact Christianity has been a poor fit everywhere...which explains why it`s so fractured and so damn bloody...against its own kind and then everyone else. It`s as if no one feels comfortable or really believes it and to quiet their own doubts and maintain the unconscious fiction that they all leaped to it and took to it so easily and naturally, they have to force it on everyone else or dominate and shut them up. The imposition of Christianity on them in the first place, coupled with the implanted bit of nonsense about their ancestors leaping into it willingly and joyously, does great violence to a sort of ethnic or cultural truth buried deep within them...the vaguest of memories that something is not "quite right" and not being at peace with themselves in what they`d think would bring them peace...i.e. their idea of god...they can`t tolerate doubt anywhere or for that matter tolerance itself. Which is the reason the Assyrians could live side by side easily with all sorts of other gods and people...for they WERE secure in their beliefs because Ashur was their god..they created him and in return he inspired them and it was a complete and perfect fit...which allowed them to bring the best they had out of them..there were no "guilt" complexes..no "agonizing"...there was nothing to agnoize and feel guilt for..Ashur was theirs and they were his.

That`s not true of Christians. All of them were forcibly converted by the Romans...who just incidentally had subjugated the Jews to such a point that they NEEDED a Messiah...and went on to make lots of other people`s lives so miserable, they too needed a Messiah..the classic case of the doctor bringing the disease he then offers to cure you from...the Romans made people`s lives hell on earth..the vast majority..and it was from among them that any willing "converts" were to be found. The rest..the people they conquered who had their own cultures and religions intact they had to forcibly convert...and to make it stick..they took the children to "teach" them the new, the only, the best way...follow Christ right up to the cross and get to heaven, where your rewards will be waiting you. In the meantime…listen to whatever the pope tells you and the Empereor/king/president too…and keep looking to the heavens above…while we screw you down below.

This accounts for the conflict you sense in most Christians..their inabillity to live up to the rules..and the resulting agony and chest thumping they indulge in..and no one more than the Puritans who`ve got themselves so tied up in knots and hating it that they can`t stand anyone anywhere who looks like he and she are enjoying life just fine...thank you all the same..that`s why they yell SINNER!!! and the LORD WILL GET YOU!!!, when they mean they will..because you are making them uncomfortable...drinking that wine and dancing naked on the beach with some lovlies...they SO long to do that themselves...that the best they can manage is to fuck altar boys when no one is looking.

The Romans forced people into Christianity..or forced them to force themselves..which is marginally worse...to screw yourself I mean. No one wanted any part of a Messiah...but they soon were made to see the "need" for one..which easily enough changed into a HOPE for one..and soon a LONGING for one. That`s the irony of it..the only people who truly needed saving from the lives they`d made for themselves on earth were the Hebrews..everyone else was forced into the same kind of abject misery and impotence...and then handed a ticket to Messiahville.

The Assyrians..more so than anyone at that time..did great violence to their souls and had great violence done to them, when they were forced into converting to a religion that had nothing in common with them..they already had kindness and goodness and compassion..but they never had any need to go down on their knees begging a Jew for salvation...never. And they still don`t.
