...but when I was eighteen, fresh out of high school and signed up for the draft, awaiting my turn to ride my BSA to Canada...I and another guy pulled an old man from a burning apartment building in front of over 300 witnesses, including family members...well before the police and fire trucks arrived. Though a photographer took shots of a cop washing broken glass from the cuts in my elbows and the other guy was treated for smoke inhalation by medics at the scene...the next day the San Jose Mercury...the leading newspaper for Silicon Valley printed the story complete with an interview with the fireman who went on to explain how he`d gone through the apartment till he found the almost dead man and carried him out to safety...when we two pulled him through a broken window we smashed...and no one ever said a word. I had a beard then too and young men with beards were not to be "heroes"...we were supposed to be flag-burners and godless atheists. The very conservative mother of my friend, who was shipping out for Nam that week was furious and couldn`t believe what she read...I`m sure years later she believed the newspaper account. What choice did she have? Did she want to stand alone against an entire newspaper and its grateful readers? Get back away from society if you would understand it. --------------------- |
