We really are rather funny. It's been said over and over that these aren't religious forums...that we're here to discuss our ethnicity and our role in the world as Assyrians...and to stop intruding religion into everything.

I'd like nothing more than to never hear of Christ again...or Moses or Allah...I'd even be willing to set aside any references to Ashur...except that, for better or worse, the very word Assyrian means "follower of Ashur"...and I haven't heard anyone explain that away yet. We weren't known as the "People of the Wheel"...or those who "Build Chariots"...or those who "Slay Dragons"...or tried to "Educate Hebrews"...our title had our god's name in it for a good reason...as Christians have their god's name built into theirs. And you can't worship two gods and so we chose Christ...and then broke our heads trying to explain they are really the same thing..."so what's the big deal"? As if our beloved fellow-Christians or Jews or anybody else would do such a thing.

But anyway, back to the central point. As much as I and others would like to keep religion out of it...it's these same Christians who drag Christ in by the hair every other day and plop him right in front of us all.

The discussions go something like this...

"I think we should begin to consider how we can co-exist in the Mideast".

The answer comes back like this..."Dear fool and TRAITOR PIG!!!...you must not know your history FOR haven't the Muslims (They bring them up first)...always KILLED US CHRISTIANS CHRISTIANS CHRISTIANS...who is paying you, YOU DIRTY Muslim filth"?

Now...it's posible the person replying would have written "Assyrian" instead of Christian...but that solves nothing because in the very next breath...if you ask why in the world Muslims would have anything against Assyrians when, in Iraq, they've gone to such pains to preserve our common artifacts and take great pride in our history, their history...this comes back at you..."because, you IGNORANT FOOL...ALL real Assyrians are CHRISTIANS CHRISTINS CHRISTIANS and everyone knows Muslims HATE CHRISTIANS CHRISTIANS CHRISTIANS"!!!

We can't discuss being Assyrian for ten minutes before some Christian reminds us we were killed for Christ and in the same breath, they killed us for being Assyrian too because, "they're the same thing". I maintain we were never killed for being Assyrians..that's absurd...the Iraqi Muslims are also Assyrians. We were disliked and then distrusted and then shot for being traitors to our country and the people who gave us shelter when we were refugees fleeing for our lives from Iran and elsewhere.

Muslims had no reason in the world to hate Assyrians...for what? But they had every reason to loathe Western Christianity and any native Christian who would side with it. They would have hated the Irish if they came to Iraq and became Levies...or the Chinese, or anyone else. It isn't an "Assyrian thing" at all...it isn't even really a Christian thing...it's a..."we-don't -like-people-who-side-with-our-attackers-and-who-are-living-among-us", sort of thing.

Just as it's absurd to say the Palestinians, or any Muslims, "Hate Jews". It's the CHRISTIANS who hate Jews and have for hundreds of years and just tried to kill every last one of them, as they've tried to do on several ocassions in their bloody past. The Palestinians would hate Martians...or the people of Bali or the Netherlands if they came to Palestine and did to them what the Israelis have been doing for 35 years and more backed, yet again, by Christians.

Muslims rightly see any Christians among them as potential traitors and collaborators...but they don't make blanket generalizations...they don't stereotype...as the Christians in America did recently when they killed Sikhs and turned their rage against anyone who "looked" wrong or was flying in an airplane..."While Dark And Hairy". In Iraq Tariq Aziz and Donny George were never shot at or discriminated against by Muslims when all the while their Christian co-religionists of the West were starving to death our Iraqi children. These are the Assyrian qualities of humanity and tolerance we have and like our names...far more beautiful than what the Judo-Christians replaced them with.
