In the old days in the 1800s in America, the Temperance Movement was mainstay of popular culture. Drinking wasn`t just a sin..it was a serious social problem with fathers drinking away the little money the earned as a recompense and a way to forget the impoverished lives they led as near slaves...before the Labor Movement came to be...and familes were regularly torn apart, with violence and abandonement etc.

It all got mixed up with religion too..so that swearing off booze was a way of reconnecting with Jesus...Mark Twain talks of "regulars", who would tearfully swear off booze one week...only to get drunk the rest of the days till the Revival came back through when they`d get all misty-eyed again and swear once more to remain clean and sober and follow Jesus etc.

When the same guy showed up at 25 Revival meetings to swear each time that he was a new man, this time for sure...it was counted as 25 "avowals"...and it didn`t take much to come to mean 25 individuals testifying before the Lord...sounded better too.

Same thing with these claims that every day 200,000 "come to Jesus". It`s the same ten guys "coming" 10,000 times. They come and they go...they promise and they break the promise..and it felt so good promising..that they`re eager to promise again and again..cause to these people too TALK is very important.

It`s silly bullshit all of it..I mean Christianity and these promieses and tearful ejaculations before the Lord.
